THE THING FUNCTION IN MODERNISTIC NOVEL

Н. А. Городнюк, N. A. Gorodnyuk

Abstract

The article deals with analysis of thing function in the East Slavic modernistic novel of the early 20th century. The article objective is to set the examined functions of things in imaginative literature (accessory, ideologic, aesthetic, world-modeling, culturological, characterological, plot-making, and compositional) and to complete a list with new ones, which are peculiar to modernistic novel of the early 20th century, namely plot-generative, motive-generative, associative, intertextual, text- generative, and cross-discoursive. Plot-generative function is that thing “hints” to the plot development, it promotes the plot unfolding or vice versa. The thing may be used as a “fraudulent” prompt. It could be an element of author’s game with a reader. Associative function shows the ability of the thing to generate and develop a new imagery range, to expand and enrich an artistic meaning, to make allusive references. Intertextuality function is a condensation of various cultural meanings by things. Thus the things retransmit inherently a wide range of semantics, showing a complex spectrum of intertextuality links and deepening a matter of the text. Motive-generative function lets the author, by entering some things, “threads” the motives and extends the motive system of the text. Text-generative function is that thing presents author’s textual strategy, being its fundamental factor. Cross-discoursive function: the thing shows kinds and the way of text organizing by changing its tonality and “switching” the discourses. Conclusion: in prose of the 20th century the thing expands appreciably the way of its representation and functional diapason. It gets not only the everyday detail, the mark of some environment or the mean of psychological insight, but the medium of author’s social and cultural strategy, the important text-generative and style-making agent.

Key words: modernistic novel, thing category, plot-generative, intertextuality, motive-generative, text-generative, cross-discoursive functions of thing.
