CIVIC ATTITUDES AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES OF A UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR AS A BASIS FOR THE FORMATION OF STUDENTS’ NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS (HISTORICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL ASPECT

Abstract


The article proves that the formation of national consciousness of Kharkiv University students in the XIX century was greatly influenced by personal qualities, civic attitudes, scientific and professional activities of P. Hulak-Artemovskyi, H. Kvitka-Osnovianenko, I. Sreznevskyi, A. Metlynskyi, O. Potebnia, D. Bahalii, M. Sumtsov and many others. Their works "... aroused public interest and love for the people of Southern Russia", taught "to examine very carefully the phenomena of the vernacular and to take an interest in folk art and ethnography", contributed to the development of young people’s willingness to study “the Little Russian nationality". It has been revealed that the education scientists who loved devotedly Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian history asserted that the language of the Ukrainian was "not a dialect but a language" which had every right to exist independently, restored in younger generations the feeling of national freedom and self-sufficiency, helped overcome the national inferiority complex, etc. It has been determined that the best representatives of the Slobozhanshchyna region didn’t limit their communication with young people to lecturing within state owned education institutions: they received students at home, provided them with works of literature, and engaged them in discussing different topics. The article emphasizes that many prominent scientists, artists, educators former students of Kharkiv University claimed that their love of Ukraine, its history and culture as well as for its people had been born as a result of such interaction, participation in various research projects and educational events.
