THE EDUCATIONAL CONTENT INFLUENCE ON THE FOUNDATION OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS` ECOLOGICAL CULTURE IN JAPAN AND UKRAINE

Abstract


This article is dedicated to formation the ecological culture of elementary school students in Ukraine and Japan. Environmental education is recognized as an important public issue both in Japan and in Ukraine. It is mentioned in the article that Japan is one of the countries of high achievements in the nature conservation and implementation of the environmental education. Approaches to the definitions of "environmental culture" are shown. The article also reports the results of Japanese and Ukrainian elementary students` survey about the importance of nature in human life, the importance and ways of nature conservation. Ukrainian and Japanese students have knowledge about environment, desire to solve environmental problems and participate in environmental conservation. Much larger part of the Japanese students than Ukrainian understands the relation between environment issues and human lifestyle. The comparative analysis of the Japanese and Ukrainian achievements in TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) is performed. The dissociation between Ukrainian students’ theoretical knowledge and the solution of practical problems is shown. The article analyzes the standards and guidelines relevant to the environmental education in Japan and Ukraine, filling content of elementary school subject related to environmental protection, the development of environmental competence. The study points out that the percentage of topics related to environmental issues in Ukrainian school is unreasonably low. It is draw attention to the place and significance of Japanese elementary students’environmental experience and their practical activities.
