Lucas Paqueta is currently under investigation by the FA for suspected breaching of betting rules, following wagers which predicted his presence against Aston Villa on March 13th causing an integrity alert.

Investigations were initiated into other matches featuring Brazilian midfielder. One such instance took place when he was booked against Bournemouth in the 94th minute.

The Brazilian midfielder has been removed from Brazil’s squad

City were hoping to sign Paqueta to strengthen their midfield options following the departures of Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez as well as Kevin De Bruyne facing up to four months out due to injury, yet this deal appears to have fallen through due to FA scrutiny of Paqueta.

Paqueta was issued three yellow cards this season for challenges on Aston Villa's John McGinn on March 12 and fouls against Leeds Crysencio Summerville and Illia Zabarnyi during Premier League matches at Bournemouth on May 21. Additionally, on August 12 he received another booking after pushing Illia Zabarnyi in an AFC Bournemouth Premier League fixture.

Sky Sports chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol reports that Paqueta was surprised and shocked by this news, according to Sky Sports' chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol. It appears bets were placed on him getting yellow cards; according to Paqueta himself he did not place these bets and does not gamble on football matches.

The FA are investigating three bookings

The FA is investigating three bookings against Paqueta from his first Premier League game this season - two were yellow cards issued for his cynical tackle on John McGinn and foul against Leeds' Crysencio Summerville.

After integrity officials identified suspicious betting patterns on these bookings, authorities were able to trace these bets back to accounts registered in Paqueta Island near Rio de Janeiro and expedite the investigation.

Paqueta was said to be taken aback by these allegations and denies placing any bets himself. It's unlikely he will be interrogated formally by FA as part of this investigation.

City has pulled out of the deal after learning of an ongoing investigation and has decided not to proceed with it, with speculation mounting that midfielder may still join City in 2019-20, though whether they feature this season remains unknown.

The transfer has been cancelled

Paqueta's yellow card against Bournemouth set off an investigation, prompting the Football Association (FA) to launch an intensive five-month probe and end City's attempts at signing him. They may have been searching for evidence of spot-fixing - where small aspects such as cards or corners can be altered in order to influence game outcomes instead of only changing outcomes altogether.

Integrity officials were alerted of an anti-corruption alert following the Bournemouth fixture and informed both West Ham and Paqueta two days later after conducting their own due diligence. Paqueta is said to have been taken aback at this news; he maintains he never placed any suspicious bets.

Last summer, West Ham signed him as their club-record signing and he excelled immediately, scoring four goals and providing the assist for Jarrod Bowen's winner in their Uefa Cup final victory. Pep Guardiola targeted him again this summer due to Kevin De Bruyne being sidelined due to an injury.

The club have apologised

The FA have initiated an investigation into West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta after suspicious betting patterns emerged surrounding his booking in three games for West Ham. Bets may have been placed on him being sent off.

The initial booking under scrutiny involves his late tackle on John McGinn in a draw with Aston Villa last March, followed by two further cautions he received for pushing Illia Zabarnyi during Brighton's 1-1 draw and showing discontent towards referee Peter Bankes during their home game against Leeds.

Investigations are focused on accounts linked to those living in Paqueta's native Brazil or those close to him, while his club are in communication with the FA. If found guilty of betting breaches he could face suspension from English football - similar to how Brentford striker Ivan Toney was banned after admitting 232 breaches of its betting rules in May.
