Boro have an incredible chance to close the gap on Sheffield United to just one point this evening, increasing pressure on Blades boss Michael Carrick ahead of Wednesday's trip to Sunderland.

United must focus more than they did against West Bromwich Albion last weekend to secure victory. Over the last two decades, only one Championship side has failed to claim automatic promotion after being seven points ahead with 15 games left to play.

Middlesbrough

Today, the top two clubs in the Championship meet for an important clash at Turf Moor. Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough are looking for their fourth straight win as they seek revenge against David Wagner's Cardiff.

It will be interesting to see if Sheff Utd can widen their lead over Boro as they aim for automatic promotion. Burnley are currently three points ahead of the Teeside outfit and have won six out of their last seven league games.

Sheff Utd still have two games to go in order to move closer to the automatic promotion places. A victory this evening would give them a huge boost of confidence.

Middlesbrough is one of the largest towns in North East England and offers plenty to do for visitors. From archaeology and town archives to costumes and natural history exhibits, Middlesbrough has something to please everyone. Plus, the city boasts two museums: Dorman Museum and Middlesbrough Institute for Modern Art.

Sheffield Utd

Sheffield United are in excellent form and can extend their lead over Middlesbrough if they win at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night. After winning three of their last four matches, including a convincing FA Cup win against Leicester in midweek, Sheffield United have plenty of confidence going into this challenging matchup.

They still have a game in hand on Middlesbrough, giving them added motivation to stay unbeaten in the Championship. Their victory against West Brom last weekend opened up a seven-point gap between them and Middlesbrough; and they will be eager to close it down on Wednesday.

Middlesbrough have won five straight matches in the Championship to maintain their promotion bid and will be eager to make it six against Sheffield United on Wednesday night. They'll need to play much better than they did against Stoke, but should still manage a victory.

Sunderland

David Prutton of the EFL believes Sheff Utd could take a major step towards promotion on Wednesday night. After winning 10 of their last 12 matches, Michael Carrick's side are beginning to close in on Paul Heckingbottom's men.

A draw against mid-table Stoke City has narrowed the gap on Boro to three points, but United have a game in hand and an improved goal difference. They can make significant inroads into that deficit when they host the Black Cats at Bramall Lane this weekend.

Sunderland have made a promising start to the new campaign, yet remain five points behind leaders Middlesbrough and Norwich City. They face an FA Cup fourth-round clash at Fulham on Saturday before traveling to Millwall in the league later in the month.

Luke O'Nien has been removed from the Sunderland lineup due to a red card received during their loss against Swansea City, so Mowbray will be looking for an impressive performance from his players. January recruit Cameron Archer could make his debut and pose a real threat at the top of the pitch in this one.

Stoke City

The Potters have endured a difficult season and look likely to remain in the bottom three, but they can extend their lead over Boro with victory against Sheff Utd on Saturday. After winning seven of their last eight league games, the Potters will hope to keep up the momentum against an in-form Sheff Utd side.

Stoke City are based in the historic city of Stoke-on-Trent and have a proud football heritage dating back to 1925. As one of the twelve founding members of the Football League, they boast an impressive list of legendary players who have graced their field.

On two occasions, Liverpool have won the Football League Cup and made it to the FA Cup final for the first time in 2011.

Alex Neil took over as manager of Stoke in the summer and has been an incredible success. He brought a cup run to the club and has an impressive record in the Championship too.
