Raheem Sterling scored against his former club to spark an exciting 4-4 draw that reignited interest in the Premier League, yet Erling Haaland's controversial opener and subsequent equalizer provided the true drama of this high-voltage encounter.

At Stamford Bridge, it was one moment which set off fireworks. Phil Foden began it by freeing James to slip past Marc Cucurella before sending over the cross.

Goals

After an innocuous opening period, City took control of this game with an unexpected penalty award from referee Anthony Taylor following Marc Cucurella's apparent clash with Erling Haaland inside the box and referee Anthony Taylor awarding Haaland the spot kick - Haaland duly slotting it home and giving City an advantage. A fierce Chelsea response ensued: Reece James forced Ederson into an athletic save before Raheem Sterling found Nicolas Jackson for an equaliser goal - all within 10 minutes!

Pep Guardiola was visibly annoyed with this decision and pointed to Haaland on the touchline to tell him, 'you have to take it' - which turned out to be accurate: Haaland scored an outstanding equaliser just under 10 minutes from time, before Rodri's deflected effort appeared to have sealed victory; but Cole Palmer's late penalty brought about another dramatic finish and left both teams disappointed - yet certainly provided entertaining entertainment for neutral spectators alike.

Goalkeepers

Erling Haaland's penalty caused quite the stir among Chelsea supporters and neutrals alike. Although Haaland did not touch the ball prior to being brought down by Marc Cucurella, Anthony Taylor nevertheless awarded a spot kick which Haaland expertly executed.

City were quick to regain the lead following halftime as Manuel Akanji headed in an equaliser from a corner, before Phil Foden danced past Buyako Saka's challenge and fired just wide of the far post for another goal.

City's third goal came after he played an integral part in its creation as he laid off to Armando Broja. Armando attempted to cut inside Ruben Dias but Chelsea defender Daniel Agger dived down and caught him on his trailing leg - leading the referee to issue a yellow card as punishment.

Referees

Both teams presented an exciting showdown as they battled through different styles and temperaments in an intense encounter. Bernardo Silva led Manchester City into an early lead before Raheem Sterling put them ahead from close range - only for Manuel Akanji to level things back out just before half time!

Erling Haaland's penalty gave the hosts an early lead in the second half. The Norwegian striker was given a spot kick after being brought down during an aerial collision between himself and Marc Cucurella; referee Robert Hodge consulted VAR but ultimately did not change his initial ruling.

Jamie Carragher strongly disagreed with the award, insisting that VAR should have been called upon to review what happened between Haaland and Cucurella - this being important because its protocol mandates play must continue while reviewing takes place.

Substitutions

City looked vulnerable at the back throughout and appeared worried when Mauricio Pochettino's side attacked, yet never trailed by more than one goal, ultimately salvaging an unlikely point when Rodri scored in stoppage time.

Haaland gave City an early lead following only 25 minutes when referee Anthony Taylor awarded them a penalty against Marc Cucurella's apparent tackle of Norway international Haaland. Replays showed them engaging in an altercation at that moment but Taylor opted to award a spot kick and Haaland made no mistake from it.

After the break, City mounted a fierce comeback as Nicolas Jackson equalised when Ederson deftly parried Conor Gallagher's low drive into his path - Ederson had parried into Jackson's path by parrying it back off Conor Gallagher himself! However, City appeared to win it four minutes from time with Rodri's deflected strike finding its way into the net via deflection; but chaos reigned in stoppage time when Ruben Dias was penalised for diving onto Armando Broja before Cole Palmer calmly slot home his penalty shot to salvage a draw!
